The Race Card

Playing the race card is an expression that involves one deliberately accusing others of racism. The phrase also implies that he who “plays the race card” is falsely attributing or correlating the wrongdoings of others to racism.

Having watched the first episode of the miniseries “What I hear when you say” titled “Race Card”. I can say that I myself believe that there is no such thing as playing the race card.

In the video; Hadiyah Robinson argues that it is in fact the accusers -and not the accused- of playing the so called race card that are the ones trying to escape from the argument, and the other point of view at hand.

The idea that accusing someone of “playing the race card” constitutes a microaggression is proposed by Comedian Kiyun Kim. She believes that it is a microaggression as it invalidates ones experience.

Personally, I believe that bringing up the “Race Card” in any conversation is useless as it adds nothing to the conversation and makes it so that the accused assumes a defensive position in the dialogue. It also helps the accuser avoid facing their own biases. It is a refusal to grow ones point of view.

One response to “The Race Card”

  1. your blogpost confused me – who is the person who is committing a microaggression… the Black person saying that a white person said or did something racist, or the white person saying accusing the Black person of playing the “race card”?
